Helping School Counselors Reach for the Stars

F/O Ryan Heidorn (DAL) engages two counselors at ALPA's booth during the ASCA conference earlier this week.

ALPA Education Committee volunteers joined over 3,000 school counselors, administrators, and industry professionals in Los Angeles, Calif., for the annual American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Conference July 14–17. The conference, themed "Reach for the Stars," featured professional development and informational sessions as well as an exhibit hall where counselors could discuss current issues, forge connections with their peers, and learn about careers.

A hot topic: becoming a professional airline pilot. F/Os Sara Baer (ALA), Ryan Heidorn (DAL), and Aaron Michaels (FFT) talked with more than 400 counselors about the career outlook, paths to the flight deck, and their experiences flying. The counselors asked numerous questions about the piloting profession and were excited to bring that information back to their students. They were especially interested in using ALPA's website, Cleared to Dream, as a resource to encourage students to reach for the stars and equip them with the tools necessary to become professional airline pilots.
