Celebrating Aviation at This Year's "Oshkosh"

F/O Alex Arcamuzi (EDV) runs through a preflight inspection of a Cessna 150 with several future aviators at KidVenture. The kids pointed out a number of problems with the aircraft, including a bird's nest behind the propeller.
ALPA returned to EAA AirVenture, the "World's Greatest Aviation Celebration," this week at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisc., with scores of Association volunteers working together to promote aviation and the airline pilot profession. Shifts of pilots are staffing an ALPA booth in the southwest corner of Exhibit Hangar C located in the EAA Four Corners area, greeting fellow members, and talking with others interested in learning more about the Association and flying for a living.
Another ALPA contingent is over at Pioneer Airport across from the AirVenture Museum, coordinating with other aviation organizations to conduct KidVenture activities. Pilots are running young people through weight-and-balance exercises and also having them conduct preflight inspections of a seasoned Cessna 150, which clearly needs attention. These exercises and others like them are designed to help participants better understand the mechanics of flight and the importance of taking necessary safety precautions.
Earlier today, ALPA Education Committee chair F/O Mark Haley (UAL) gave a presentation titled "Learn What Airline Pilots Do" to a packed audience in EAA Forum Plaza. ALPA Membership chair F/O Kandy Bernskoetter (FDX) will moderate a panel of female regional, mainline, and cargo pilots, in that same general location, tomorrow in a presentation titled "ALPA Women Fly."
Meanwhile, ALPA members can be seen flying aerobatic demonstrations, running camps, displaying vintage aircraft, broadcasting live on EAA Radio, and enjoying the many fun-filled activities this special week has to offer. More than 500,000 aviation enthusiasts are projected to attend this year's event, which runs through Sunday, July 29.
